About The Sacred Heart of Jesus
The Sacred Heart of Jesus is not a canonized saint but a devotion of the Catholic Church: the veneration of the physical and spiritual Heart of Christ as the symbol and living organ of his love for humanity, wounded on the Cross and pierced by the lance (John 19:34). Rooted in medieval mystical writers and given wide public form through the visions reported by St. Margaret Mary Alacoque in the 1670s, the devotion asks trust in Christ's mercy and reparation for sin. It received major papal endorsement from Pope Leo XIII, who in the 1899 encyclical Annum Sacrum consecrated the entire human race to the Sacred Heart, and whose Sacred Congregation of Rites in that same year approved the Litany of the Sacred Heart for public recitation throughout the universal Church. Its liturgical feast is not a fixed calendar date but a movable one: the Friday following the octave of Corpus Christi, nineteen days after Pentecost Sunday.
Pope Leo XIII, encyclical Annum Sacrum, 25 May 1899 (public domain, papal document); Litany of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, approved for public use by decree of the Sacred Congregation of Rites, 27 June 1899 (public domain, official liturgical text); John 19:34, Douay-Rheims translation, public domain.
