Opening prayer is the traditional English rendering of Pope Leo XIII's 'Ad te, beate Ioseph', composed for recitation after the Rosary and published in his encyclical Quamquam Pluries (15 August 1889). The English text here follows the anonymous translation printed in Ludwig Gemminger's 'Flowers of Mary' (1894, p. 22), and attested again in the 'St. Ann's Manual' (Montreal, 1899) and the 'Manual of the Purgatorian Society' (Boston, 1907, carrying an 1894 Redemptorist approbation) — an anonymous translation published well before 1900. It is a different translation from the one in the 1910 Raccolta. Daily closing invocations are drawn verbatim from the Litany of St. Joseph, approved for public recitation by Pope St. Pius X in 1909. Daily meditations were newly composed for this novena, grounded in the Gospel accounts of Matthew 1-2 and Luke 2 (Douay-Rheims) and in the plain historical record of papal devotion to St. Joseph.

Opening prayer

Pray this at the start of each day.

To thee, O blessed Joseph, we have recourse in our affliction, and having implored the help of thy thrice holy Spouse, we now, with hearts filled with confidence, earnestly beg thee also to take us under thy protection. By that charity wherewith thou wert united to the Immaculate Virgin Mother of God, and by that fatherly love with which thou didst cherish the Child Jesus, we beseech thee and we humbly pray that thou wilt look down with gracious eye upon that inheritance which Jesus Christ purchased by His blood, and wilt succor us in our need by thy power and strength. Defend, O most watchful guardian of the Holy Family, the chosen offspring of Jesus Christ. Keep from us, O most loving Father, all blight of error and corruption. Aid us from on high, most valiant defender, in this conflict with the powers of darkness. And even as of old thou didst rescue the Child Jesus from the peril of His life, so now defend God's Holy Church from the snares of the enemy and from all adversity. Shield us ever under thy patronage, that, imitating thy example and strengthened by thy help, we may live a holy life, die a happy death, and attain everlasting bliss in heaven. Amen.

Day 1 of 9

Joseph the Just Man

Opening prayer

Amen.

Before Joseph speaks a single word in Scripture, he is already described: 'a just man.' He has found Mary with child, and the law he loves gives him grounds to act against her publicly. He chooses instead to end the betrothal quietly, unwilling to expose her to shame, weighing mercy alongside the demands of the law before he has any angel to tell him how the story truly stands. That is the whole of Joseph's righteousness on display in a single verse — not a man who follows rules mechanically, but one whose fidelity to God has already trained his heart toward gentleness before he understands what God is asking of him. Justice, in Joseph, is never cold. Bring before him today whatever situation asks you to be both honest and kind at once, where the easy path is to pick one and abandon the other. Ask him to form that same instinct in you: to see clearly, judge fairly, and still choose mercy every time it is possible.

Closing prayer

Joseph most just, pray for us. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Day 2 of 9

The Angel in the Dream

Opening prayer

Amen.

The angel comes to Joseph not in daylight with a blaze of glory, but in sleep — the most defenseless, unguarded state a person can be in. 'Joseph, son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.' And Joseph, waking, simply does it. No recorded question, no bargaining, no delay: he takes Mary as his wife and gives the child a name, which under the law made Joseph legally his father. This is obedience without spectacle — the kind that rearranges an entire life around a single instruction received in the dark, before any of the consequences are visible. Most of the obedience God actually asks of us looks like this: quiet, private, costing us a plan we had already made peace with. Ask Joseph today for that same swiftness — not stubborn resistance to what you already sense is being asked of you, but the grace to rise, as he did, and simply begin.

Closing prayer

Joseph most obedient, pray for us. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Day 3 of 9

Spouse of the Virgin

Opening prayer

Amen.

Joseph's marriage to Mary asked more of him than any other marriage in history has asked of any man: to love completely a wife whose motherhood was not his, to protect a household whose center was not himself, and to do it without a shred of resentment recorded anywhere in the text. He is called, in the old litany, the 'chaste guardian of the Virgin' — a title that names exactly what made his fatherhood possible. He held the space around Mary and Jesus without needing to occupy the center of it himself. That is a particular kind of strength, rarer than the kind that seizes control: the strength to serve a good that is bigger than your own role in it, and to do so without diminishment or bitterness. Wherever your own vocation — marriage, family, work, community — asks you to hold space for someone else's flourishing rather than your own advancement, bring that to Joseph today.

Closing prayer

Chaste guardian of the Virgin, pray for us. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Day 4 of 9

Bethlehem: No Room, and Then a Manger

Opening prayer

Amen.

Joseph brings his pregnant wife on a hard journey to Bethlehem because a foreign census demands it, and arrives to find every door closed. Luke tells it in the fewest possible words: there was no room for them at the inn. What Joseph does next is not recorded as heroic — he simply finds shelter where he can, a stable, and makes it work. Fatherhood here is not glorious; it is resourceful, exhausted, and faithful under pressure that was entirely outside his control. He could not fix the census, could not secure better lodging, could not make the world welcoming to his family — he could only keep showing up for the next necessary thing. Most of the demands placed on the people who care for us, and that we place on the people we care for, look exactly like this: unglamorous, improvised, done anyway. Bring to Joseph today whatever circumstance has left you making do with less than you hoped for, and ask for his same steadiness.

Closing prayer

Foster-father of the Son of God, pray for us. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Day 5 of 9

Flight into Egypt

Opening prayer

Amen.

The angel warns Joseph again in a dream: Herod means to kill the child. Joseph does not wait for morning. He rises by night and takes the mother and the child into Egypt, a foreign land, with no plan beyond safety, and stays there until it is safe to return. This is Joseph as protector in the most literal sense — the man standing between a threat and the people he loves, willing to uproot everything without notice because their safety outweighs his own comfort or certainty. The Church has long called him under this title 'terror of demons,' not because he fought evil with force, but because his vigilance and readiness to act placed him squarely against it. If you are carrying a fear for someone's safety, or a threat to something entrusted to you — a family, a livelihood, a fragile situation — bring it to Joseph today. Ask him for the same watchfulness that does not sleep through the warning.

Closing prayer

Terror of demons, pray for us. Protector of Holy Church, pray for us. Amen.

Day 6 of 9

The Workshop at Nazareth

Opening prayer

Amen.

Scripture identifies Jesus, once, by his father's trade: 'Is not this the carpenter's son?' Joseph's whole working life is compressed into that single passing remark, yet it is enough to know that the God who made the universe learned to use his hands from Joseph — learned to measure, to plane wood, to finish a joint, to price a job fairly, to show up each day whether or not the work felt significant. There is no recorded miracle in the workshop at Nazareth, only decades of ordinary competent labor, and it is precisely that ordinariness the Church has chosen to hold up as holy. Pius XII gave Joseph a feast under this title in 1955 for exactly this reason: to say plainly that the work most people do — unremarked, repetitive, necessary — is not beneath sanctity but can be the very shape of it. Bring your own labor to Joseph today, whatever it is, wherever it stands: sought, lost, uncertain, or simply hard. Ask him to make it fruitful and to make you faithful in it.

Closing prayer

Model of artisans, pray for us. Glory of home life, pray for us. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Day 7 of 9

Three Days Lost, Then Found

Opening prayer

Amen.

At twelve years old, Jesus stays behind in the Temple without telling his parents, and Joseph and Mary spend three days searching Jerusalem for him — three days not knowing whether their son is safe, hurt, or lost. When they find him, Mary speaks the anguish plainly: 'thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.' Notice that Joseph is named a father here without qualification, and that his sorrow is given equal weight with Mary's. This is fatherhood's harder, less-discussed dimension: the fear that comes with loving someone you cannot fully control or protect, and the relief on the far side of it that does not erase the fear, only redeems it. If you are carrying worry for someone you love — a child grown distant, a situation gone quiet, a person you cannot reach — bring that searching to Joseph today. He knows exactly what those three days felt like.

Closing prayer

Pillar of families, pray for us. Solace of the wretched, pray for us. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Day 8 of 9

The Hidden Years

Opening prayer

Amen.

After the return from Jerusalem, Scripture falls silent on Joseph for the rest of his recorded life. There is no more narrative — only the plain statement that Jesus 'was subject to them,' living quietly at Nazareth. Joseph disappears from the text the way most faithful people disappear from history: not through failure, but because the work of raising a family well rarely generates a story. The old litany calls him 'mirror of patience' and 'lover of poverty' — titles earned in these unrecorded years, in a home with no luxury and no audience, where a man kept doing the same faithful, hidden things day after day because they were right, not because anyone was watching. Most of a life is made of exactly these years: unremarkable, undocumented, and no less holy for it. Ask Joseph today for peace with whatever in your own life feels hidden, small, or unwitnessed by anyone but God.

Closing prayer

Mirror of patience, pray for us. Lover of poverty, pray for us. Amen.

Day 9 of 9

A Happy Death

Opening prayer

Amen.

Joseph is absent from every account of Jesus's public ministry, his crucifixion, and his resurrection — the strong and consistent tradition of the Church is that he had already died before those years began, and that he died in the presence of Jesus and Mary, the two people he had spent his life protecting. There is no Scripture to narrate it, only the shape of the silence itself: the man who guarded the Holy Family through census, poverty, exile, and every ordinary hardship in between, allowed at the end to go in peace, held by exactly the ones he had held. This is why the Church has, for centuries, turned to Joseph above all other saints when death approaches — not because he can prevent it, but because he shows what it looks like to end a faithful life surrounded by love rather than fear. Ask him today, for yourself and for everyone you carry in prayer, for a death like his: not necessarily easy, but held, and not alone.

Closing prayer

Patron of the dying, pray for us. Hope of the sick, pray for us. O God, who in Thine unspeakable providence didst vouchsafe to choose blessed Joseph to be the spouse of Thine own most holy Mother: grant, we beseech Thee, that we may deserve to have him for our intercessor in heaven, whom we reverence as our defender on earth: who livest and reignest world without end. Amen.

About St. Joseph

Joseph of Nazareth was a tekton — a carpenter or builder in wood and stone — of the house of David, betrothed to Mary when he learned she was with child. Matthew's Gospel calls him 'a just man,' and the whole of his story is told without him ever once speaking: he obeys the angel who comes to him in dreams, takes Mary as his wife, names the child Jesus, flees by night into Egypt to save the boy's life, and returns to raise him quietly in Nazareth, teaching him a trade. He is the only father the incarnate God ever knew growing up, and the Gospels give him no recorded words at all — only decisive, protective action. Tradition holds he died before Jesus began his public ministry, in the presence of Jesus and Mary, which is why the Church invokes him for the grace of a peaceful death. Pius IX named him Patron of the Universal Church in 1870; Leo XIII devoted an encyclical to him in 1889; Pius XII instituted the feast of St. Joseph the Worker in 1955.

Compiled from the Gospel accounts of Matthew 1:16-25 and 2:13-23, and Luke 2:1-52 (Douay-Rheims translation). Papal acts referenced (Pius IX's 1870 declaration of Joseph as Patron of the Universal Church; Leo XIII's encyclical Quamquam Pluries, 15 August 1889; Pius XII's 1955 institution of the feast of St. Joseph the Worker) are documented Church history.
