About St. Gerard Majella
Gerard was born in 1726 in Muro Lucano, Italy, to a poor family; after his father's early death he was apprenticed to a tailor who treated him harshly, and he later worked in the household of the local bishop before joining the Redemptorists as a lay brother under St. Alphonsus Liguori. As a brother he was known for tireless, cheerful service in humble tasks, and for what witnesses described as unusual spiritual gifts, alongside a reputation for total honesty and humility. In one well-attested episode, a woman falsely accused him of misconduct; rather than defend himself and expose her to public shame, he accepted a period of suspension in silence, and was vindicated only when she later confessed the accusation was untrue. He is remembered in popular devotion for an act of kindness toward an expectant mother in danger during a difficult delivery, which is the origin of his patronage of childbirth. He died of tuberculosis in 1755 at twenty-nine and was canonized in 1904.
Biographical facts drawn from standard public-domain Redemptorist hagiography and widely repeated historical accounts; the childbirth episode is transmitted through popular devotional tradition rather than a single primary document, and is described here in general terms rather than with invented specifics (names, exact dates) that cannot be confirmed.
