About St. Christopher

Christopher is one of the most widely venerated patrons of travelers, though almost nothing about his life can be established as verified history. The oldest layer of tradition is simply a report, from as early as the fifth century, of a martyr named Christopher venerated in the region of modern Turkey. The vivid story known today — a huge man who ferried travelers across a dangerous river and one day carried a small child who grew unbearably heavy, revealing himself as Christ bearing the weight of the world — belongs to a much later medieval legend, recorded in collections such as the thirteenth-century Golden Legend, rather than to any early historical account. Because so little can be confirmed, the saint was removed from the Church's universal calendar of obligatory feasts in the 1969 liturgical reform, though his feast remains kept locally in many places and devotion to him, especially as protector of travelers, has never faded. His name itself, from the Greek for "Christ-bearer," is the heart of what devotion to him has always meant: carrying Christ, and being carried safely, on a journey.

Historical assessment of St. Christopher's cultus and the scarcity of verified biographical detail, including the 1969 removal from the universal calendar, drawn from standard, widely corroborated reference material on the saint and the reform of the Roman Calendar (Mysterii Paschalis, 1969). The river-crossing legend is recorded in the medieval Golden Legend (Jacobus de Voragine, c. 1260) and is presented here explicitly as legend, not verified biography.
